Alum Mixer and 50th Anniversary of the College of Agriculture Will Highlight Alumni and Parents’ Weekend
California State University, Chico’s 2003 Alumni and Parents’ Weekend is planned for the week of Oct. 6 and the weekend of Oct. 10 and 11. The week is filled with events for parents, alums, community members and students in residence halls.
A CSU, Chico Alumni Association Chico Chapter mixer will be held on Wednesday evening, Oct. 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the BMU Auditorium. This is the second alumni chapter mixer, and organizers are hoping to attract alums in the Chico area who may not have been involved in alumni activities previously. There will be free hors d’oeuvres, no-host beer and wine, and door prizes. Separate colleges will have tables with information on current achievements and activities.
The Class of 1953, the “Golden Grads,” will hold a reunion social hour and dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday evening at the Holiday Inn. Other Golden Grad activities include a tour of Bidwell Mansion on Saturday and a luncheon at the BMU Auditorium.
A university picnic and barbecue will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the Kendall Hall lawn. Organizers expect 1,000 people. Following the barbecue at 1:30 p.m., the time capsules for 1933, 1943 and 1953 will be opened.
On Saturday, the College of Agriculture will celebrate its 50th anniversary at its Fall Festival. The festival begins at 4 p.m. with farm tours and a variety of activities, an address by Dean Charles Crabb on the east lawn of the Pavilion, a wine and cheese tasting, and a tri-tip dinner.
Bill Lyons, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, will be the keynote speaker for the Agriculture dinner and awards program. Myron Openshaw will be inducted into Agriculture’s Hall of Honor. Openshaw is co-owner of G&M ranches, a member of the Butte county Cattlemen, and a member of the College of Agriculture’s Superior Ag committee. A silent auction will be ongoing throughout the evening, followed by a dance until midnight.
The Department of Biological Sciences is also celebrating a 50th reunion of the Eagle Lake Biological Field Station. Graduates and the public are invited to an open house on Saturday in the Holt Hall Herbarium, room 129.
Other reunion activities include an Alpha Chi sorority dinner Friday evening, 6 p.m. The Department of Physical Education will hold a reunion breakfast to benefit the Art Acker Scholarship on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Lambda Pi is holding a reunion meeting at the Warrens Reception Center on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
