Mathematics, Engineering and Science Program Receives $400,000 for Scholarships

The California State University, Chico Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Program has received $400,000 from the National Science Foundation for scholarships to engineering/math and computer science students.

The Computer Science Engineering Mathematics Scholarship proposal submitted by program director Paul Villegas for $400,000 will provide 58 students with $6,250 each over two years. Clarke Steinback, Department of Computer Science, will serve as co-investigator and help in the student selection process.

This is the third NSF-funded scholarship program, and it brings the total scholarship awards to near $800,000.

“I believe this is the largest single scholarship within the university,” said Villegas. “These scholarships are especially important to students in technical fields that often demand an extra year of work in order to graduate. They allow deserving science students to focus on their studies and to stay in school.”

MESA is in its 31st year of service. The program serves more than 22,000 California students. It is one of the oldest and most successful college-preparation programs in the country for educationally disadvantaged students. In 2002, California MESA received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.
