Geography Students put CSU, Chico on the Map in Competition

Three California State University, Chico students placed first, second and third in the mapping competition at the annual meeting of the California Geographical Society at American River College in Sacramento, April 25 through 27.

Starla Smock, a graduating senior in the Department of Anthropology, won first place with her map titled “The Nome Cult Trail.” Kyley Cross, a senior in the Department of Geography and Planning, won second place with a hand-drawn map of the journey of an imaginary explorer. Jolie Henricks, a graduate student in the Department of Recreation and Parks Management, won third place for an innovative computer-generated Art Deco map.

The non-geography students are taking cartography classes as part of the Department of Geography and Planning’s certificate in Geographic Information Systems Technology. The maps are products of assignments in the Introductory and Advanced Cartography class. Eugenie Rovai, chair of the department, developed the curriculum.

Steve Stewart, M.A., is currently teaching the course. He was a former student of Rovai’s.

“These student wins by non-majors are so affirming of our cartography program at CSU, Chico,” said Rovai, “and of the good job Steve Stewart is doing teaching the class. The students competed against majors from universities and community colleges across the state.”
