Design Students Win Top Awards in National Competition

Deedra Cobb and Jessie Gardner, both senior graphic design majors at California State University, Chico, took the honors in the Michigan State University Design Contest for college students.

The competition attracted 236 entries from 179 campus newspapers from throughout the nation and was judged by a team from the Chicago Tribune. Entries for the contest were mailed in during April, and results were announced this week.

Cobb and Gardner are design managers for The Orion, the student-managed newspaper at CSU, Chico.

Cobb, The Orion’s assistant advertising design manager, took first place among nine entries in the advertisement category. Her entry included a recruitment ad for The Orion and an ad for fraternities.

Cobb, 23, of Bakersfield, will receive a plaque and an Amazon.com gift certificate from the sponsoring Society of News Design.

Gardner, 22, from Reno, Nev., took second place among 39 entries in the sports page category. The entry came from the spring 2002 semester, when Gardner was sports designer for The Orion. She currently is the newspaper’s art director.

Orion adviser Dave Waddell said Cobb and Gardner are products of CSU, Chico’s “excellent” communication design department.

“Deedra and Jessie have both worked on The Orion for several semesters. I think the judges recognized the talent and creativity that went into their designs. Both are real pros at this point,” Waddell said.

Winning entries in nine other categories came from students at Syracuse University, Michigan State, University of Southern California, University of North Carolina, Marietta College and Ohio University.
