Forensics Team Earns High Marks for Successful Season
The California State University, Chico forensics team ended the 2002-2003 season with a collection of noteworthy successes and high honors at several year-end tournaments.
The forensics team was ranked 16th in the nation, the fourth consecutive year that CSU, Chico has been recognized in the top 20. This was also the third consecutive year that CSU, Chico won the first place Western region sweepstakes award. This high ranking is a sign of the cumulative efforts put in by both the novice and varsity debaters during the 2002-2003 competitive season.
The varsity debaters returned from the Cross Examination Debate Association National Championship Tournament, held March 20-24 in Arizona, with several accolades. Jay Brower took home 20th place in the tournament’s top speaker awards, out of 346 speakers overall. He worked with Clayton Cornell to secure a win against the eventual national champions from New York University. CSU, Chico had the only team to accomplish that feat.
Monica Julian was awarded a spot on the Academic All-American Debate squad for her efforts at the tournament. Julian and teammate Zach Justus secured a spot in the elimination bracket and made it to one of the final rounds. They were one of 64 teams nationwide to be invited to the National Debate Tournament held at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
The varsity debaters aren’t the only students excelling this season. The novice debaters traveled to the Novice Debate Nationals in Washington D.C., on March 14-17. Elizabeth Gourley and Victoria Riordan took fourth place at the national event. In addition, the novice speech competitors took high honors at the National California Forensics Association Spring Fling on April 26. Lee Stansbury won first place in the Informative Speaking event in Fremont. Crickett Weaver won second place in the same event and won third place in the Impromptu Speaking event. Joseph Luk received honors in the Split Duo event, where two speakers from different teams come together to perform literature.
