Sociologist Talks About Marketing in Sports Media
Noted sociologist and CSU, Chico alumnus Michael Messner is giving a talk, “Booze, Babes & Balls,” Wednesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in Ayres 106 on the California State University, Chico campus. The discussion of the marketing of alcohol and sexuality in the sports media is free and open to the public.
Messner is a professor of sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California and the chair of the sociology department. He has written several books on sports, including “Taking the Field: Women, Men and Sports,” “Paradoxes of Youth and Sport” and “Power at Play: Sports and the Problem of Masculinity.”
Messner received a bachelor’s degree in social science and a master’s in sociology from CSU, Chico 27 years ago and has spoken about sports and gender on campus before. He is the former president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport and has published research reports on sports and marketing.
