English Student Receives Award for Public Service
President Manuel Esteban will present Julie Scaife, a senior English student, with a plaque and $600 as the recipient of the Glenn Kendall Service Award at the 13th Annual Outstanding Student Leadership Award Reception on Wednesday, April 23, at 3 p.m. at the Albert E. Warrens Reception Center during Founders Week 2003.
Scaife, nominated by Judith Rodby, professor of English, is being recognized for her record of outstanding scholarship, outstanding public service within California State University, Chico and the community and her proven ability to work effectively with others. Rodby said Scaife stands out as an exemplar of excellence and is the most well rounded student that she has worked with in 15 years of teaching.
Joshuah Whittinghill, adviser for the Golden Key International Honour Society, described Scaife as a genuine, compassionate person, a committed volunteer and a dedicated student.
Scaife has volunteered and worked with several campus and community organizations, such as the Chico Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Wildcat Pride program, the Golden Key International Honour Society and English Honour Society. Scaife is also a part of the English honors program and has been placed on the dean’s list for several years. She hopes to pursue a law degree after graduation with honors from CSU, Chico in 2003.
President Esteban will also present students who received honorable mention with a certificate for their contribution to public service. They include Jennifer Cooper, journalism and political science; Karen Hosier, sociology; Clare LaFrance, philosophy; Leanne Mixa, recreation administration; and Sarah Seward, speech language pathology and audiology.
This award was established in 1970 in recognition of CSU, Chico President Emeritus Glenn Kendall, who made public service a priority while serving office and encouraged students and faculty to do the same.
