CAPE Sponsors Forums Next Week on Current Ethical Issues
The Center for Applied and Professional Ethics (CAPE) are sponsoring three forums in succession, April 22-24, on the California State University, Chico campus. All events are free and open to the public.
“Prospects for Peace in the Middle East” is being held on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center room 135, moderated by Andrew Flescher, director, CAPE, and professor of religious studies. This forum will discuss the possibilities of peace in the Middle East. Contributing speakers include Irv Schiffman, professor of political science; Loren Lybarger, professor of religious studies; and Jim Jacob, professor of political science.
“Has Special Education Outlived Its Usefulness?” discusses the needs of special education and whether or not those needs are truly being served. It takes place Wednesday, April 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Television Studio A in the Meriam Library. Mark Keegan, professor of education, along with educators from the Chico Unified School District, will be presenting.
“Darwinism, Religion and Morality” is being held on Thursday, April 24, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Ayres Hall room 120. In conjunction with the Anthropology Forum Series, this is the third part of the “Darwin at the Millennium” sequence. Moderated by Thomas McCready, professor of mathematics, also presenting will be Lisa Gannett, professor of philosophy, and Micki Lennon, professor of religious studies.
A wide variety of topics are not unusual for CAPE, Flescher said. “CAPE sponsors balanced, intellectually rigorous forums intended to promote ethical reflection about timely and salient issues of concern within and outside the university,” he said. An advisory board, consisting of the director of CAPE, the dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, faculty representatives and professional staff, governs CAPE.
