CSU, Chico Agriculture Professor Wins Prestigious $20,000 Award

California State University, Chico College of Agriculture professor Cindy Daley has been named one of five recipients of the California State University Wang Family Excellence Award for 2003.

Daley and the honorees from other CSU campuses will each receive a $20,000 award.

Former CSU trustee Stanley T. Wang established the Wang Family Excellence Award in the amount of $1 million in 1998. Its purpose is to recognize and celebrate CSU faculty and administrators for extraordinary accomplishments.

Over a 10-year span, four faculty members and one administrator will be honored each year with an award. This is the fifth year awards have been given.

The Wang Award is the latest in a string of honors for Daley. Earlier this year, she was named as CSU, Chico’s Outstanding Professor for 2002-03. Last year, the American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources named her the recipient of its Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2001, the California Agriculture Teachers Association presented her with its Teacher of Teachers Award.

Daley received a Ph.D. in endocrinology from the University of California, Davis in 1997. She did her undergraduate work in animal science at University of Illinois, then earned an M.S. in animal science from California State University, Fresno.

Daley began teaching at CSU, Chico in 1993 as a lecturer and was hired as an assistant professor in 1998. She has procured approximately $1.7 million in grant money during her tenure at CSU, Chico, working on projects from agricultural waste to biotechnology. Daley headed a national research project that resulted in the birth of three cloned calves in 2001. At the time, only 10 cloned calves across the country had survived birth. Daley is also highly respected as a teacher and adviser, as well as a valuable liaison to the agricultural community in the North State.

The other 2003 Wang Award recipients are Doug Davis, CSU, Bakersfield, Visual and Performing Arts and Letters; Claire Palmerino, CSU, Fullerton, University Administrator; David Pagni, CSU, Fullerton, Natural Sciences, Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and Engineering; and Robert Blackey, CSU, San Bernardino, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Services. The recipients will receive their awards at the May 13 CSU Trustees meeting.

Former Wang Award recipients from CSU, Chico are history professor Bob Cottrell and Fred Ryan, former vice provost for information resources.
