16th Annual Math Field Day Promotes Interest in CSU, Chico
On Friday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., more than 200 eighth-, ninth- and 10th-grade students from Northern California are expected to participate in the 16th Annual Math Field Day at California State University, Chico.
Students are accompanied by teachers from their respective schools and spend the morning participating in math activities that are facilitated by CSU, Chico faculty members and Chico Math Project teachers.
After lunch, students participate in the popular “Math Steeplechase,” located on the lawn next to Modoc Hall. The game is made up of six stations with the students divided into six randomly produced teams. They rotate stations and answer math related questions or perform physical activities. This event gives students an opportunity to mix mathematics with fun and meet new people. The top-scoring teams receive T-shirts for their outstanding achievements.
The day is designed to encourage interest in mathematics and give students a good first impression of the university. Students attend from schools in Butte, Tehama, Sutter, Yuba, Shasta, Plumas, Lassen and Siskiyou counties.
More than 60 CSU, Chico math majors and prospective math teachers are expected to take part in the events. The event sponsors include the Chico Math Project, the CSU, Chico Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the CSU, Chico Center for Math and Science Education, the Mt. Lassen Mathematics Council and the CSU, Chico Math Club.
