100th Birthday for Retired Economics Professor John Smale
Professor Emeritus John Smale, who turns 100 years old on Sunday, Nov. 24, will be honored at several gatherings this weekend at The Lodge at The Terraces Retirement Community at California Park.
Smale founded the Department of Economics at California State University, Chico (then called Chico State College) and served as its first chair. He retired in 1968. He established a scholarship, The Smale Award, which is awarded annually to an outstanding economics student.
Professor Smale was honored at noon on Friday, Nov. 22, at the meeting of the High Twelve Masonic luncheon group. There will be a coffee and cake reception for the residents of the Lodge and associated facilities on Sunday.
On Saturday an invitational luncheon is scheduled for noon to 2 P.M. A number of community leaders, university administrators and faculty will be on hand. President Manuel A. Esteban, Vice President Paul Moore, and Dean Jeanne Thomas of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will attend.
This is the second celebration of a centennial birthday in a little over two years for CSU, Chico. Former university president Glenn Kendall, for whom Kendall Hall is named, was similarly feted last year. Dr. Kendall turned 101 in September.
