University Needy Children’s Program Helps Butte Families
For more than 20 years, California State University, Chico’s needy children’s program has been helping families in Butte County during the holidays through donated gifts and food certificates. This year more than 75 departments within the university are expected to adopt families.
Each year social workers in the Children’s Division of Butte County Social Services choose families for the program who are in need and are taking steps to better their situation. Some have participated in parenting classes and are learning how to provide for their families.
Gifts such as clothing and educational toys will be collected in early December and distributed by the social workers. Additionally, each family will receive a food certificate for approximately $50.
“We have a tremendously generous campus community,” said Yvonne Lydon, university staff member and chair of the program. “Every year I continue to be amazed at all the wonderful gifts our campus provides for these families.”
Last year, 232 children in 83 families received $40,000 worth of gifts and food certificates.
