Civil Engineering Students Put Young “Minds in Motion”
The Department of Civil Engineering and the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at California State University, Chico will host “Minds in Motion” on Sept. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at several locations on campus.
This event coincides with ASCE’s 150th anniversary and is designed to introduce young students to the fields of engineering, mathematics and science through a series of informational displays, hands-on activities and competitions. More than 1,000 first through 12th grade students from the greater Chico area are expected to attend.
Activities and exhibits are planned in the Free Speech Area and on the Kendall Hall lawn, and include construction of gumdrop domes and puff mobiles, videos, and heavy equipment displays. The Human Powered Vehicle and the Supermilage vehicle will also be available for viewing.
Special competitions for grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and 11 will take place next to the George Petersen Rose Garden and winners in each group will be recognized during an awards ceremony. These competitions include building a structure capable of supporting a brick out of index cards and paperclips, creating tinfoil penny floaters, and constructing paper towers, hoop gliders and a popsicle-stick bridge. Some of the planned activities and competitions are designed to meet the California Content Standards for Science.
Other CSU, Chico student groups participating in this event include the National Society of Black Engineers, Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Chico Geoscience Students and the Society of Physics Students.
Although this is the first time an outreach event of this type has been launched by ASCE students and the Department of Civil Engineering, similar events are taking place nationwide.
