Annual Learning and Teaching Conference Highlights Include Environmental Education, Service Learning, Outstanding Teacher Lecture

California State University, Chico’s eighth annual Conference on Excellence in Learning and Teaching will be held on campus Thursday, Sept. 19, and Friday, Sept. 20.

Thirty workshops and the Outstanding Teacher for 2001-2002 Award Presentation and Lecture are part of this year’s offerings for CSU, Chico faculty, staff and students.

Among Thursday’s sessions are Campus and County: A K-18 Continuum Model for Technology Learning; Student/Instructor/Community Partnerships: A Win-Win Situation; and Plagiarism Prevention: Writing-to-Learn in the Age of the Internet.

Friday’s sessions include Integrating Democratic Practice into the University Experience; Web-based Instruction: Challenges and Possible Solutions; and Graduating Information Literate Students: Up-Dating a Program Curriculum for the Information Age.

In addition, some conference participants will be led on tours of the university’s Butte Creek Ecological Reserve and Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Another highlight is How to Educate with Help from the Garden!, a presentation by Maria Rock, gardening columnist and author. Rock will share ideas about a school curriculum that includes gardening. The workshop will be 9-9:50 a.m., Thursday, in Colusa Hall, room 116.

Professor of Nursing Carol Huston is the 2001-2002 Outstanding Teacher Award recipient. Her presentation and lecture will be Friday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center room 134.

Huston has been a CSU, Chico faculty member since 1982 and is the adviser for the School of Nursing’s RN-BSN program. She received her MSN degree from CSU, Chico and her MPA and DPA degrees from the University of Southern California. She is the co-author of “Leadership Roles and Management Functions in Nursing,” now entering its fourth edition, and “Management Decision Making for Nurses,” in its third edition.

The conference is a major program of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), which is operated by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. CELT is also responsible for awarding grants and sponsoring other conferences.
