Golden Key Honour Society Receives Award at International Convention
Five of California State University, Chico’s Golden Key Honour Society executives attended the August international convention in Atlanta, Georgia, where the chapter received the “Most Improved Chapter Award.”
Golden Key is a worldwide academic honors organization with chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. In 25 years, the society has recognized more than one million juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent of their class, in all fields of study.
The most improved award is based on the work a chapter has done within a year. During this past year, the Chico chapter moved from being an inactive chapter to being an active chapter, which means participating in service projects, promoting voluntary service and working with college faculty and administrators in supporting high standards of education.
The Chico chapter has gone beyond chapter requirements for activity. Members participated locally in Make a Difference Day, America’s Promise, Songs for Seniors, a spring activity day in first- and second-grade classrooms and stocking stuffing for a classroom in an underprivileged school.
Service plans for this year include participating with Wings of Eagles, the Butte Humane Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
“Golden Key rewards members with a lifetime of opportunities for recognition, scholarship, networking, employment and service. Membership is a compelling statement of a student’s commitment to the pursuit of excellence, ambition for personal and professional progress and dedication to others through community service, ” said Graham Apanler, an honorary member of the national organization.
The CSU, Chico chapter of Golden Key was chartered in April 1992 and is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Josh Whittinghill, Educational Opportunity Program, will be the adviser for the coming year.
