Interim Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Named

Professor Dennis Rothermel, chair of the Department of Philosophy, has accepted a two-year interim appointment as vice provost for Academic Affairs and dean of Undergraduate Education at California State University, Chico.

Rothermel will begin his new duties part time during this month and begin full time Aug. 1. He replaces Professor Byron Jackson, who has held the post since Oct. 1999 and is returning to his position in the Department of Political Science.

“Dennis brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to students, faculty and staff,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Scott McNall. “His generosity of spirit and work ethic will be of benefit to all of us.”

Rothermel first taught at CSU, Chico in 1981 and was appointed to a tenure-track position in 1988. He has been chair of the Department of Philosophy for five years.

Rothermel has served in the Academic Senate for many years, and was to be its chair for the academic year 2002-03. He said he plans to appoint an interim chair to serve until the Senate can convene and hold an election in the fall.

Rothermel received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Yale University. His master’s and Ph.D. degrees in philosophy are from Northwestern University. His doctoral dissertation concerned German philosophers Kant, Fichte and Hegel. His scholarly interests have included philosophy and cinema, artificial intelligence and general education.

“I am excited about taking on the duties and challenges of the vice provost for Academic Affairs and dean of Undergraduate Education,” said Rothermel. “Many aspects of this new position relate directly to the activities and service that I have pursued in recent years, which has brought me in contact with most of the members of the Academic Affairs administrative team. I look forward to working as part of that team and serving under the leadership of Provost McNall, and thus to contribute to the excellence in higher education that this institution provides.”
