Central Asian Teachers Come to Chico for Extended Training
A federal grant to California State University, Chico has brought 31 teachers from independent states of the former Soviet Union to Chico to share their experiences and learn more about their craft.
The secondary school-level English and American studies teachers arrived in Chico Sunday and are in the area through August 4. They are from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
“Excellence in Teaching,” a six-week professional development seminar, will include on-campus lectures and workshops with CSU, Chico faculty, local high school teachers and other area educators.
CSU, Chico’s School of Graduate, International, and Sponsored Programs received the grant to host the teachers from the U.S. Department of State and administered through the American Councils for International Education. CSU, Chico was selected from among 11 applicants nationwide for the program.
While they are in Chico, the teachers will get a taste of American culture along with their educational studies. Jan Edwards, program coordinator, said the teachers will attend a Chico Heat baseball game, receive Western dance lessons, go to see fireworks on July Fourth and sample U.S.-style barbecue. In addition, families throughout Chico will be hosting the teachers this weekend, giving them another window into American life.
Along with their time in Chico, the teachers will also visit Sacramento, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City.
