Debra Barger Named Dean of Regional and Continuing Education
Debra Barger has been named dean of regional and continuing education at California State University, Chico. She has been interim dean since May 2000, when she replaced retiring dean Ralph Meuter.
Barger was associate dean in the continuing education office before assuming the dean’s post. Prior to joining CSU, Chico, Barger resided in Wiesbaden, Germany, from 1981 to 1988. She was assistant dean for City Colleges of Chicago-Europe, where she administered educational programs to NATO forces and Department of Defense civilians in Europe and the Middle East.
Barger earned a master’s degree from the L.B.J. School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin in 1981. Her bachelor’s degree is from Smith College. She is a member of the University Continuing Education Association and the Western Association of Summer Session Administrators, where she served as president from 1996 to 1997.
During her tenure as interim dean, Barger has spearheaded the campus’s effort to offer a summer program supported by state dollars similar to the traditional fall and spring semesters. She has also looked to expand continuing education for area residents, such as the Northern California Local Government Leadership Institute, which has an upcoming conference, Monday, June 17.
“I’m very excited about our programs for lifelong learning,” she said. “We definitely want to expand the opportunities for people in the region.”
