Commencement Completes Week of Celebrations

The 2002 graduating class of California State University, Chico will be awarded bachelor’s degrees May 25 and 26, the main events in a week of graduation celebrations.

Approximately 1,500 students are expected to receive their bachelor’s degrees each day at the university’s 112th Commencement, for a two-day total of 3,000 students.

The ceremonies should take roughly two hours, and will be held at the University Stadium, rain or shine. Tickets are not required for admission into the stadium for Saturday or Sunday.

Commencement ceremonies for graduating students in the Colleges of Business, Communication and Education, Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology and Natural Sciences will begin 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25.

Commencement for graduating students in the Colleges of Agriculture, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Humanities and Fine Arts, the Center for International Studies and Undergraduate Education: Liberal Studies/Special Majors will begin 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26.

Graduating students will be featured speakers at Commencement. On Saturday, journalism major Kelly Nicole Brown will address the graduates. On Sunday, psychology major Stephanie Marie Casey will speak.

Sue Anderson, director of alumni and parents relations and coordinator of Commencement, said a new platform stage and banner signs at each college’s seating area will give the event a new look.

CSU, Chico will hold Commencement for master’s graduates in Laxson Auditorium on Friday, May 24, at 7 p.m. The master of ceremonies for this event will be Robert Jackson, dean of the School of Graduate, International and Sponsored Programs. Professor Judith Brasseur will serve as the honorary marshal.

Approximately 190 students representing all colleges on the campus will participate in the event. Due to limited seating, guests of graduates will be required to have tickets for Friday night’s master’s ceremony. Students may contact the School of Graduate and International Programs at 898-6880 with questions. A reception will follow Friday’s master’s ceremony for all graduates, their family and guests.

Delaine Eastin, state superintendent of public instruction, will be the featured speaker at the spring credential ceremony Thursday, May 23, in Laxson. The ceremony, which honors prospective teachers who have completed their credential programs, begins at 6:30 p.m. Approximately 175 Multiple Subject, 100 Single Subject, 30 Bilingual Multiple or Single Subject, 30 Special Education and 30 Concurrent Special Education/Multiple Subject candidates will receive certificates of recognition. There will be a reception following the ceremony on the lawn in front of Laxson.

A number of other additional celebrations for graduates also will take place this week. The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology has a graduation celebration ceremony Friday, May 24, 3-5 p.m. in Laxson. The School of Nursing pinning and candlelighting ceremony for the graduating class Friday, May 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Pavilion at California Park. A celebration for African-American graduates will be Saturday, May 25, from 1-3 p.m. in PAC 144, and a celebration for Latino graduates will be Saturday 2-4 p.m. in Laxson.
