Political Scientist Headed to Capitol Hill

Artemus Ward, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science, California State University, Chico, has been awarded a Congressional Fellowship by the American Political Science Association.

Ward will work as a legislative assistant for a member of the U.S. Congress for the academic year, beginning in September 2002. Ward, who specializes in Constitutional law, can choose who he wishes to work for, provided the Congress member agrees. He is considering a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The fellowship is not intended as a research fellowship, but as an opportunity to gain hands-on experience that can then be used in teaching about American government and politics. Personal research is not prohibited, and many fellows do their own research when not working for the member on legislative projects.

Ward is the second member of the Department of Political Science to be selected as a fellow. Professor Diana Dwyre was the Wallace Steiger Fellow (the highest ranked fellow in that year) in 1998. Dwyre co-authored “Legislative Labyrinth: Congress and Campaign Finance Reform,” based on research conducted during her fellowship. CQ Press, Washington, D.C., published it in 2001.
