Re-entry Students Receive Scholarships
Several re-entry students at California State University, Chico, recently were awarded scholarships at an awards dinner held on April 26.
Re-entry students, on the average, are over the age of 25 and have returned to the university after having their education interrupted by jobs, families, military service or other endeavors.
Many of the scholarships recognize the unique challenges and accomplishments of the re-entry student. In addition to the students receiving monetary awards, six received plaques of commendation for their outstanding academic work and superior ability to meet outside challenges.
Richard and Edith Kindon Scholarship and Soroptimists of Chico, Positive Parenting Award

Winfield Mowder Scholarship
Elnora Gilman received the Winfield Mowder Scholarship. She is a graduate student in environmental science engineering. Her ultimate goal is to help provide safe water worldwide. She commutes from Red Bluff and is the first in her family to attend college. She also received a University Re-entry Scholarship.
David Ware Outstanding Re-entry Awards
David Ware was an exceptional re-entry student who died from Lou Gehrig’s Disease in the spring of 1998. These awards, yet to be fully funded, were established in his honor. The top award went to Debra Prue, business administration major and the mother of three, who received training as a general accounting specialist in the Air Force. Sandra Pena, former director of the Teacher Diversity Program at CSU, Chico, donated the award.
Those who were recognized with Plaques were Debbie Midling, Los Molinos, junior Journalism/option in Public Relations; Jason Clemins, Oroville, graduate student in English; Patty Cotter, graduate in public administration, and recipient of the CSU Trustee’s Award in 2001; Karen Tandy, Gridley, senior double major in biological sciences and environmental studies; Keith Landaiche junior, majoring in agricultural science; and Diana Anderson senior in liberal studies.
Primetimers Awards
Debbie Midling, Los Molinos, junior in journalism; Debbie Saeger, of Paradise, graduate student in psychology, and Martha Rickaby, Gridley, senior in nursing, received awards from the Primetimers program at CSU, Chico.
The University Re-entry Scholarship
The following students received University Re-entry Scholarships: Gary Bull, Susanville, sociology and history; Armanda Waddington, Cottonwood junior, English; Goria White social work; Karen Tandy, Jason Clemins and Elnora Gilman (mentioned above in the Ware summary); Heidi Erickson, Chico, graduate student, physical education; Catherine Flatt, Redding, senior, electrical engineering; Mikki Westbie, Magalia, senior, double major in environmental sciences and biological sciences with a minor in philosophy; Benjamin Seigler, Oroville, psychology with a child development minor.
The winners of monetary awards were chosen from a field of more than 175 older students. The committee consisted of Carol Burr, Tom Sawyer and Rez O’Sullivan from CSU, Chico, and Barbara Jones from Primetimers. They would like to see funds for re-entry students grow, and one of their first priorities is to fully fund the David Ware scholarships.
