Mac Martin Endowment to Help Develop Student Leaders

To add to the opportunities for California State University, Chico students to become leaders, a new endowment was celebrated Saturday, April 27, at the culmination of Founders Week.

Fifty-five campus community members and alumni gathered at the Albert E. Warrens Reception Center to pay tribute to the creation of the Mac Martin Student Leadership Endowment. Approximately $40,000 has been raised so far for the new fund.

Mac Martin is one of CSU, Chico’s most respected and appreciated former staff and alumni members. During his many years of service, Martin assisted in countless student extracurricular activities, helped rebuild the alumni association and started the first food service. He may be best known for the annual Mac Martin Invitational Basketball Tournament.

“It is gratifying that we can honor someone such as Mac in this way with an endowment fund that reflects his values and experience,” said Paul Moore, vice president for University Advancement and Student Affairs.

A 14-member steering committee, chaired by alumnus Sandy Beck, has been formed to oversee how the endowment is spent. Beck, among others, thanked donors at the Saturday event, and Martin also spoke about the importance of the fund.

The endowment funds will support a variety of student leadership programs. Developing student leaders is a university priority: In the past few years, CSU, Chico has created a leadership minor, a position within the Student Activities office for leadership programs and the Jackie Faris-Rees Institute for Student Leadership.

Founders Week is an annual spring event during which the university celebrates its heritage and showcases its many areas of excellence.
