CAVE Director Selected as Staff Employee of the Year
The executive director of Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE), Nan Timmons, was named the Staff Employee of the Year for 2001 at the annual staff awards luncheon, Thursday, April 25, at California State University, Chico.
Timmons is a 16-year veteran of CAVE. She was hired in 1986 as the CAVE office manager, then became the assistant director, and was selected as executive director in 1996. She is also an adjunct faculty member, teaching University Life courses. She is a recognized expert in service learning.
“Nan embodies CAVE’s motto, ‘Life is for Learning,’ and capitalizes on opportunities to teach students through experience. She is never too busy to talk to a student about school, work or personal problems. She has seen hands-on learning in action, and knows that it improves the caliber of student learning. She is committed to promoting service-learning as a teaching pedagogy,” said President Manuel A. Esteban in his presentation remarks.
Timmons is a strong advocate of community involvement and models it herself as the chapter adviser to Alpha Delta Pi sorority and as president of Soroptimists International of Chico. Students who work with her consistently speak of her dedication and commitment to CAVE. Her nominators described her as “a dedicated wife, mother and a generous friend to her neighbors and colleagues.”
The staff employee of the year, which originates with a nomination by colleagues, is a coveted award at CSU, Chico.
CAVE is an Associated Students program. It is a nationally recognized volunteer organization serving the community since 1966. This nonprofit agency administers 22 programs, which provide volunteer services to children, elderly, special populations and other community agencies and state facilities. Each year between 1,600 and 1,800 CAVE volunteers provide more than 50,000 hours of community service.
