Founders Week 2002 Highlights Best of University
California State University, Chico founder John Bidwell would have a hard time today finding the eight-acre cherry orchard he donated to the state to launch the Northern Branch of the State Normal School in 1887.
Every spring, the university celebrates its heritage and showcases the many areas of excellence that the campus—with its 16,000 students and 119 acres—now boasts.
Founders Week 2002 begins Saturday, April 20, with Opera Highlights and a baseball doubleheader against Grand Canyon, and concludes the following Sunday, April 28, with the Greek Week Community Challenge, a baseball game against Dominguez Hills, the Donna Stone Breed Memorial One Acts and a choral music concert—”American Dreams, New Beginnings.”
Among the special events next week will be an address by the Outstanding Professor Award recipient, Art Sanchez, at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in PAC 134, and a reception for Lisa Emmerich, the Outstanding Faculty Service Award Winner, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the Faculty Staff Dining Room.
Psychology professor Sanchez recently authored the chapter “Multicultural Family Counseling, Toward Cultural Sensibility” in the “Handbook of Multicultural Counseling.” Sanchez has consulted for the Chico Unified School District, California Migrant Head Start, and Esplanade House. History professor Emmerich has served on nine departmental or campus committees, coordinated the American Indian Studies Program, co-coordinated the Multicultural and Gender Studies fifth annual senior Symposium, and is a docent at Dye Creek Ranch and secretary and board member of the Chico Creek Nature Center.
Founders Week includes several other events honoring segments of the campus community, including the student-based University Awards Reception April 24, Staff Awards Luncheon April 25 and Distinguished Alumni Dinner April 26.
To share details about its long history in Chico, the university will host the annual Campus History Tour, followed by a showing of the CSU, Chico Video History, twice next week. The history tour, led by student docents, and the video provide lots of information and interesting tidbits about the university. Monday, April 22, at 10 a.m., the Campus History Tour will start at the Kendall Hall Lawn flagpole. Tour takes roughly 45 minutes. Then at 11 a.m., in Harlen Adams Theatre, the outstanding CSU, Chico Video History will be shown. The video is roughly 30 minutes in length. Friday, April 26, the tour starts at 11 a.m., video at noon, same locations.
A schedule of Founders Week events follows, and is also available at the Web site: http://www.csuchico.edu/pa/foundersweek. For tickets for athletics and arts events, contact the University Box Office at 898-6333. For general information, call 898-4143.
