Oscar-winning Filmmaker to Discuss Work, Screen Documentaries

Freida Lee Mock, winner of Academy and Emmy Awards for her documentaries, will visit California State University, Chico Wednesday, April 17, to screen two of her films and talk about her work.

The screening and talk will be at 7 p.m. in Ayres Hall 106. It is free and open to anyone.

Mock will show “Bird by Bird with Annie,” about author and humorist Anne Lamott, and a film about the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus titled “Sing!” Mock will make opening remarks prior to the films, then hold a question-and-answer session afterwards.

“Sing!” was nominated for an Academy Award this year, one of four Oscar nominations for Mock. Her film about the woman who created the Vietnam War Memorial, “Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision,” won the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary in 1995. She has received numerous other awards, including a 1989 Emmy Award for the documentary “Lillian Gish: The Actor’s Life for Me.”

Mock, a Chinese-American, has a particular interest in documentary topics embracing diversity and increasing respect for all people, and has directed films about Holocaust survivors, Asian immigrants and Native Americans.

Mock has also directed numerous films on the arts and humanities, and specializes in portrait films such as the Kennedy Center Honors biographies, on subjects such as Rose Kennedy, Neil Simon, Benny Goodman and Aaron Copland.

On Memorial Day 2001, her documentary about Vietnam War POWs, “Return With Honor,” narrated by Tom Hanks, was aired nationally on PBS.

During her visit, Mock will also meet with video production students in CSU, Chico’s communication design department.

Mock’s visit is sponsored by the Associated Students Multi-Cultural Council, Building Bridges, the College of Communication and Education and the Psychological Counseling, Wellness Center and Testing Office.
