Public Invited to Piano Auditions for Kruschke Prize
Auditions for the 2002 Earl R. and Marilyn Ann Kruschke Prize in Piano Performance will be held Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre at California State University, Chico. The public is invited at no charge.
The $2,000 prize, awarded annually to one outstanding CSU, Chico piano student for the enhancement of the recipient’s education or career in classical music, was established in 2000 by Professor Emeritus Earl Kruschke and his wife, Marilyn Ann Kruschke.
The prize is merit based and the use of the funds is unrestricted. “The winners can buy sheaves of sheet music or attend festivals—things that purely enhance their talent,” said Mike Bankhead, chair of the Department of Music.
Previous winners have been Ling Lin, 1999, who went on to the New England Conservatory in Boston; Dustin Breshears, 2000, a master’s student at CSU, Chico and a private music teacher; and Mark Friedman, 2001, a keyboard student. (Friedman is preparing for a recital on April 27, 7:30 p.m., PAC 134. He’ll perform works by Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin and Rachmaninoff.)
The Kruschkes have long been supporters of the arts. Earl is a member of the Board of Directors of the North State Symphony and chair of the endowment committee. Marilyn is active with the Chico Symphony and its guild. Both play musical instruments themselves, Earl the piano and Marilyn the French horn.
The winner of the piano performance auditions will be featured in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts’ Celebration of Student Achievement on May 17.
