Local Government Leadership Institute Offers Professional Development Series

Northern California local government leaders, in partnership with CSU, Chico and Humboldt State University, announce Leadership Insights, the first in a new professional development series especially designed for local government officials and managers in California’s northstate region.

Leadership Insights will take place Friday, Dec. 7, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Chico Masonic Family Center. The registration fee of $150 includes lunch and participant materials.

Presenter Gordon Graham-attorney, educator and law enforcement veteran-will share his insights on effective leadership. Graham’s vast knowledge in multiple disciplines provides participants with an informative seminar that will have a lasting impact.

Key decision-makers at all levels of local government-counties, cities, special districts and tribal governing organizations-are invited to attend Leadership Insights, the inaugural event of the Northern California Local Government Leadership Institute.

The Northern California Local Government Leadership Institute is a partnership among local government leaders, Humboldt State University, and CSU, Chico’s Center for Regional and Continuing Education. The institute provides a unique opportunity for county, city, tribal government, and special district governing board members, executives and managers to develop proactive leadership skills and address critical issues facing the region.

The institute’s mission is to serve northern California local government leaders with continuing executive leadership education and resources. A core curriculum of leadership courses is designed to build a solid foundation of leadership principles and skills. A series of special conference events provides a forum for institute participants to address critical issues, foster regional collaboration and develop strategic alliances.

The Local Government Leadership Institute is enhanced by the integration of technology, including videoconferencing and Web-based communication, to create an environment of virtual learning that spans the barriers of rural geography.

The institute’s advisory board is composed of a diverse group of local government leaders from the 20-county northern California region and representatives from CSU, Chico, Humboldt State University, and Butte College. Board members include John Blacklock, retired, Butte County; Christine Erlandson, personnel director, City of Chico; Michael Glaze, general manager, Oroville-Wyandotte Irrigation District; Gary Freeman, supervisor, Glenn County; Doug Latimer, administrative officer, Shasta County; Kelly Cox, administrative officer, Lake County; Paul Ogden, city manager, Auburn; Dan Hauser, city manager, Arcata; and Troy Fletcher, Yurok Tribe.

CSU, Chico’s Center for Regional and Continuing Education extends the mission of the university by providing degree, certificate, language and extension courses for students, professionals and organizations throughout the world.
