“Show Must Go On!” Raises Over $5600 for American Red Cross
Students in CSU, Chico’s Department of Theatre Arts, in association with University Public Events, raised over $5600 during the recent “Show Must Go On!” American Red Cross benefit for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.
“We are extraordinarily proud of our students and their generosity,” said William Johnson, Department of Theatre Arts chair. “We are also grateful to the large number of community members who turned out for this show.”
The student participants, along with Department of Theatre Arts faculty member Joel Rogers, created “The Show Must Go On!” after the fall musical production of “Assassins” was cancelled due to the terrorist attacks. This two-night event, presented Oct. 19 and 20 in Harlen Adams Theatre, featured a wide selection of poetry and music that celebrated the enduring quality of the arts.
College of Humanities and Fine Arts acting dean Sarah Blackstone noted in her welcoming address that there is one constant in theatre, and that is that “the show must go on.” When students and faculty decided to cancel “Assassins,” noted Blackstone, they “determined that this house, this theatre, could not remain dark and empty…they planned an evening that would allow them to begin to heal, and provide the community a place to celebrate their unity, and a way to celebrate the power of art and music to comfort and, perhaps eventually, to help us heal.”
Donations have been sent to the Chico chapter of the American Red Cross.
“We are pleased that we could join in this show of support,” said Rogers, director of “The Show Must Go On!” “Many of us have connections in New York and Washington, and this was our opportunity to help from a distance.”
