SIFE to Host Events on National Make a Difference Day
The California State University, Chico Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, along with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Girl Scouts, the UC Cooperative Extension, and the CSU, Chico Associated Students will host an educational and fun-filled day for over 100 students from grades K-12 this coming Saturday, Oct. 27, National Make a Difference Day.
Parents are encouraged to drop their children off to participate between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. to register in the Free Speech Area, and pick them up no later than 4 p.m.
The goal for the SIFE event is to provide younger students with a fun-filled experience that makes a “College Connection” and teaches them the importance of giving back to the community.
Dave Turner, a SIFE leader, said, “We’ve designed three workshops in the morning based on a case called The Pumpkin Patch Partnership. First, the children will learn how to start a business by planting pumpkin seeds; then they will learn how to grow the business with care and love; and finally they will learn how to enjoy the fruits of their labor when they sell their pumpkins.”
Starting at 2 p.m., a free barbeque and carnival will take place in the Free Speech Area on campus. The carnival will include acrobatic dogs, pumpkin carving, face painting, balloons, a dunk tank, nutrition olympics, planting pumpkin seeds, music and more.
Turner added, “A local nursery donated a tree that we will plant later that day. We’re calling it the Make a Difference Tree. Our plan is to help each child write a note thanking the firefighters, police officers and other volunteers in New York and Washington for their efforts in making a difference in their cities after the September 11 attacks.”
A complete agenda has been created for the day. CSU, Chico students who want to volunteer their time that day to help staff the carnival booths and assist in the workshops are encouraged to arrive in the Free Speech Area at 8 a.m.
“This is one of our largest activities in the fall,” said Allison Steltzner, a senior marketing major from Napa. “It gives us a chance to bring people together on our campus to further our mission, which is to promote service learning among college students by integrating free-enterprise education and community service.”
National Make A Difference Day is a national day of helping othersÑa celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.
