University Professors Lead Series on Islam
The Resources for International Studies in Education (RISE) program is hosting a three-part series on Islam, primarily for classroom teachers, on the California State University, Chico campus.
The RISE series, led by university professors Sam Edelman, Nasim Jawed and Kate McCarthy, is based on teachings about Islam, including the historical roots of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the film “Behind the Veil: Women in Islam.”
Classroom and student teachers are invited to enroll for the series, and others, including school staff, will be put on a waiting list until after the Nov. 2 deadline. Student teachers should get a signature from the Department of Education dean, chair or the supervising teacher. No university credit is available, but Chico Unified School District credit can be arranged. Registration can be completed via e-mail at sshepard@csuchico.edu.
RISE is a staff development program designed to improve international studies education in northeastern California schools. The program strives to improve the competence of elementary and secondary teachers in the teaching of international and multicultural issues.
