Associated Students Makes Donation to Student Leadership Institute
The Associated Students (A.S.) of California State University, Chico donated $5,000 to the Jackie Faris-Rees Institute for Student Leadership on Friday, Oct. 5, at the A.S. Alumni Reception.
Faris-Rees served as the A.S. president in the mid 1970s while studying history at CSU, Chico. She stayed involved as the alumni representative to the A.S. Government Affairs Council and as a mentor to student leaders after graduating in 1977. She also participated in civic groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Butte Community Action Agency. Faris-Rees served on the Chico Unified School District school board for eight years.
In the late 1990s, CSU, Chico Student Affairs personnel had talked about the possibility of a leadership institute. The institute would pool resources and coordinate leadership opportunities for students. Shortly before Faris-Rees died from breast cancer on April 22, 2000, she agreed to have the institute named after her.
David Buckley, executive director of the A.S. said, “Jackie’s personal and professional relationship with, and her impact on, the A.S. far exceeded her history as the corporation’s student president in the mid ’70s. She exemplified the leadership qualities that we, as student affairs professionals, hope to cultivate and nurture in the students we work with. It is befitting the institute carries her name. In recognition of the development of future student leaders supported by the institute’s programs, the A.S. is pledging to commit a total of $25,000 to help endow this undertaking.” The $5,000 donation from the A.S. was the first installment toward this pledge.
Once the $100,000 endowment fund has been reached, the money will be used to fund leadership programs already in place, including CSU Leaders, the campus leadership honor society, local junior high and high school leadership programs, leadership internships, a Greek leadership program and a leadership awards reception.
New programs that will benefit from this endowment include a scholarship program for incoming students who were student leaders in their high school or community colleges, developing a leadership advisory board and developing an outreach and development program for new students.
Chela Patterson, associate director of Leadership Programs, said, “Jackie often compared leadership to the good manners of holding a door open for others. The gift from the A.S. is a wonderful gesture of holding open the door for our future leaders.”
