Student Music Group Receives State and National Awards

California State University Chico’s student chapter of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) received honors at both the state and national levels at the spring 2001 conferences.

At the state level, the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) bestowed their Collegiate Chapter Award on CSU, Chico. The award was given to “honor excellence, innovation, and growth promoting music teacher training.” The chapter received the award at CMEA’s Spring 2001 State Conference in Ontario, CA.

The National Association for Music Education recognized CSU, Chico for Collegiate Membership Chapter Growth at their spring conference in Pomona.

CSU, Chico’s MENC chapter is the fifth largest in the state with 30 members. MENC provides students with educational opportunities and service-oriented activities, such as music lessons offered to public school students. Chapter officers are Cory Dearborn, president; Kyle Fehr, vice president; Amanda Mahoney, secretary; and Molly Teale, treasurer.

“It is gratifying to see the growth in numbers and quality of the MENC chapter. The students work very hard and are going to be terrific additions to public school music programs throughout the state,” said Professor Lloyd Roby, chapter adviser. Roby gave credit for the success of the student chapter to the guidance and instruction provided by faculty members Royce Tevis, Deborah Reinhardt, Jeffrey Gemmell and music department chair Michael Bankhead.
