Four-Week Cultural Immersion Program Offered for Spanish Cadets

California State University, Chico is hosting a program of U.S. Culture and Language Training for 17 Spanish cadets for four weeks during the months of July and August 2001. The program, which integrates intensive instruction and cultural activities, has been designed in consultation with staff who have worked with cadet groups over the past eight years. The cadets arrived July 21 and will stay in Chico until August 18.

The program emphasizes an integrated whole-language approach to the English language through reading, writing, listening and speaking, focusing on American culture and communicative competence as its goal. Mornings will consist of programmed activities designed for the purpose of practicing English and for enjoyment. The activities consist of the composition of a newspaper titled the “Cadet Gazette,” the production of a video, team sports, and adventure outings.

Each cadet lives with a Chico family for the entire time they are in the United States to provide maximum exposure to American daily life. Additional cultural activities such as a tour of San Francisco and Alcatraz and a day trip to a national park to participate in the Lassen Peak climb are planned throughout the month. The cadets will also enjoy a tour of Beale Air Force Base.
