Programs Recognized for Contributions to High-Quality Learning
Two California State University, Chico programs have received $5,000 awards for their innovative efforts to build a high-quality learning community among students, faculty and staff at CSU, Chico.
President Manuel A. Esteban and Provost Scott G. McNall announced that the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) awards were given to the Nutrition and Food Sciences Program and to University Public Events/Chico Performances for their innovative and collective efforts to meet the priorities of the university’s Strategic Plan for the Future.
The Creative Writing Program and Literary Editing Program, the Archaeological Research Program, the Center for Economic Development, and the University Writing Center each received honorable mention.
The Nutrition and Food Sciences Program
The Nutrition and Food Sciences Program received the award for helping to create high-quality learning environments, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Nutrition and Food Sciences has helped direct student learning for the past 36 years so that 96-100 percent of its undergraduates each year pass the national registration exam to become registered dietitians and 70 percent are accepted into dietetic internships. Both rates are significantly above national averages.
Nutrition and Food Science graduate students have one of the shortest times to graduation on the CSU, Chico campus. One hundred percent complete the program, 100 percent pass the national registration exam and 100 percent are placed professionally following graduation.
All six tenure-track faculty members mentor students in service-learning opportunities in the community, which develop strong ties with students and encourage life-long learning.
University Public Events/Chico Performances
University Public Events/Chico Performances received the award for serving the educational, cultural and economic needs of Northern California.
For 16 years, University Public Events/Chico Performances has brought performing artists, lecturers, authors, poets and others to the classrooms and auditoriums of CSU, Chico. Faculty, staff, students and the community all benefit from the Lecture Demonstrations, Lecturer Meet & Greets, Master Class Series, the Chico Performances Presenting Program, the Youth Field Trip Series and the Chico World Music Festival.
An estimated 1,800 hours of direct instruction occurred during 2000-2001 through the hundreds of student/faculty/staff interactions with some of the best-known lecturers, artists and performers in the world.
If you would like to read more about these programs and other examples of high-quality learning environments on the campus, please contact the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching located in the Provost’s Office, Kendall 106.
