Innovating Teaching Award Will Be Given
Professor Al Jackson and California State University, Chico’s Department of Recreation and Parks Management will receive the National Society of Parks and Recreation Educators (SPRE) Innovating Teaching Award, Saturday, April 28.
The Innovating Teaching Award will be presented between 6-8 p.m., at Professor Jackson’s retirement dinner, at Selvester’s Cafe-by-the-Creek, on the CSU, Chico campus. This is the first time the Innovating Teaching Award will be presented.
Innovating Teaching uses “hands on” activities to teach children how to be social with one another and how to exercise. The program has served 11,000 children around the world, mainly in military families. Innovating Teaching programs are currently running in Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow and Belgium. Jason Lau, of the University of Northern Iowa, introduced the Innovating Teaching program to CSU, Chico and to SPRE.
Innovating Teaching is being used in 127 camps around the world. Faculty members and master’s students train students using these methods for three months. The students then go to camps and teach children the methods they have learned. The camps run from 10 to 12 weeks.
Gail Hildebrand, of the School of Graduate, International and Sponsored Programs will be presenting the award.
