CSU, Chico Has New Director of Admissions

John F. Swiney, formerly associate director of admissions and records and director of school and college relations at the University of Washington, is the new director of admissions at California State University, Chico.

Swiney spent 11 years in his position at the University of Washington. Prior to that, he served in several capacities at the U.S. Air Force Academy spanning 17 years, including director of cadet appointments, director of institutional research and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology.

Swiney received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from San Diego State University. He earned a Ph.D. in psychological studies in education at Stanford.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have John join the campus community,” said Bob Hannigan, vice provost for enrollment management. “Among John’s many strengths are managing and supporting staff and maintaining positive relations with schools and community colleges. He understands what it takes to build strong relationships with counselors and students, and knows the critical information points that help students make decisions to enroll.”

“I’m looking forward to helping take Chico to the next level among California’s leading universities,” said Swiney. “I don’t see very many schools that have what Chico State has, with its combination of broad range of academics, college town setting, residential program and overall qualities people expect to find at a private institution. I’m impressed by the campus’s natural beauty, the town and the people here. This is an exciting challenge.”

Swiney, who begins his new position this week, replaces Linda MacMichael, who became interim associate dean of CSU, Chico’s Center for Regional and Continuing Education in August 2000.
