TIME Magazine Columnist To Speak Feb. 6

Joel Stein, a TIME senior editorial staff member known for his irreverence and appeal to young readers, will visit California State University, Chico as a distinguished visiting professor Feb. 6 and 7, 2001.

Stein will present a public address “Modern MagazinesÑReal News or Just a Lot of Chads?” Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in Siskiyou Hall 120. Admission is free and open to the public.

Stein, 29, a New Jersey native, received a B.A. and M.A. in English from Stanford University. Prior to going to TIME, Stein was sports editor and columnist at Time Out New York for two years. He has also served as a researcher at TV Guide and as a researcher/writer for Martha Stewart Living magazine.

Stein has gained attention for his efforts to expand TIME’s 4.1 million circulation, which has remained stagnant since 1994. “One key to their future guaranteed readership is to gather younger readers into the fold. Enter Mr. Stein, who said that he receives his most ardent mail from teenagers and college students, ” reports Alex Kuczynski of The New York Times.

Lyn Lepre, CSU, Chico assistant professor of journalism, worked with Stein at Martha Stewart Living magazine. “The thing I believe the public will find most interesting about Joel Stein is that he is a regular person with an amazing job. In the years since he graduated from Stanford, he has held a variety of positions at different media outlets, putting his mark on each publication, and always working his way toward his dream job: a columnist for a magazine like TIME. His witty writing style is always funny, often irreverent, and very readable,” Lepre said.

Stein’s visit is sponsored by the CSU, Chico Department of Journalism and the student chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists. For further information, call 898-4779.
