Italian Studies Group to Hold Pre-Opera Reception

The Italian Studies Advisory Council (ISAC) at California State University, Chico will hold its fourth annual pre-opera reception on Thursday, February 15, 5-7:15 p.m., in Performing Arts 132. The opera The Bartered Bride, by Bedrich Smetana opens the same evening.

The reception, billed as “Opera, Cuisine, and Valentines,” offers regional Italian hors d’oeuvres and desserts prepared by Chef Michael Iles of the Butte Culinary Academy, fine wines, the performance of songs by members of the Opera cast and a ticket to the opera.

Proceeds from the event go to the Maria S. Haynes Italian Studies Scholarship. “The Italian Program at CSU, Chico owes its origins to Maria Haynes, who taught in the program for 30 years,” said Eugenio Frongia. He replaced her and is now chair of the Foreign Languages Department. Professor Haynes shared her love for the Italian language, culture and literature with her students and members of the community. She started the Italian Year Abroad program and took many students to Florence over the years.

ISAC is composed of interested and involved members from the university campus and surrounding community. Members share a love of the heritage and contemporary vitality of Italian culture. The council counts hundreds of supporters from the community as members. Activities of ISAC include fostering Italian culture in the community, hosting special events and providing scholarship support for the study of Italian culture and language, locally and abroad.

The tickets include an opera ticket, food and wine for $20.00 for general admission, $18 for seniors and $15 for students. If you would like to attend the reception, but can’t stay for the opera, the price of a ticket is $12. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
