Expert on Nitrates in Groundwater to Speak
JoAnn Holloway, expert on nitrogen cycling in nature, will present a lecture titled “Evaluating the Contribution of Bedrock to Terrestrial Nitrogen Cycling” at California State University, Chico on Thursday, Nov. 16. The talk will take place at 4 p.m. in room 220 of the Physical Sciences Building.
Holloway will discuss the criteria for assessing the contribution of geologic sources of nitrogen, such as lightning and the chemical breakdown of rock, as well as human sources, such as automobile exhaust and leaking septic tanks, in surface and ground water.
The buildup of excess nitrogen in ground and surface water can lead to algal blooms and fish kills in lakes and reservoirs as well as human ailments including blue baby disease and some gastric cancers.
Holloway is currently a National Research Council postdoctoral associate at the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, and has had research published in Nature, Geology and Chemical Geology.
This lecture is sponsored by the Department of Geosciences.
