Gang Violence Expert Coming to CSU, Chico

Arturo Hernandez, author and lecturer on youth and gang involvement, will be coming to California State University, Chico on Wednesday, Nov. 29 for a two-day event on the topic of youth and violence.

Hernandez is the principal and founder of Tohono Ba’ag, an Indian charter school which uses traditional tribal methods when working with gang-affiliated students on the Salt River Reservation in Arizona.

His book, Peace in the Streets: Breaking the Cycle of Gang and Teen Violence,depicts his experiences as a teacher, family therapist and youth minister among gang youth in Watts, East and South Central Los Angeles, Compton, the Salinas Valley and Phoenix, as well as the Pima, Maricopa, Yaqui, Navajo and Apache Nations.

Hernandez will conduct various workshops Wednesday, Nov. 29, and Thursday, Nov. 30, for law enforcement, educators, students and community members on topics including healthy environments for youth in communities with a diverse population and preventative tasks in working with troubled teens.

He will also present a lecture titled “Breaking the Cycle of Youth Violence” on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Holt 170. It is free and open to the public. Hernandez’ talk is sponsored by the Butte County Office of Education, the Community Health Alliance of Oroville, A.S. Chico and the Building Bridges program, a yearlong series of events designed to increase tolerance and respect on campus and within the Chico community.
