CSU, Chico Signs Exchange Agreement with Mexican Business and Technical University
On Friday, November 3, President Manuel A. Esteban, California State University, Chico, and Jose Rocha, director general of the Colima campus of the Monterrey Tech, signed a Memorandum of Agreement for Academic Cooperation and Student Exchange. Director General Rocha visited Chico for the occasion.
The Monterrey Tech system of 23 campuses (ITESM) is a private system of higher education in Mexico that focuses on business and engineering. The agreement is to promote student exchanges and faculty collaboration. CSU, Chico students will have experience working and learning in Mexico, and Tech students will have similar experiences in Northern California.
CSU, Chico’s Latin American Studies will move their six-week cultural immersion program to the city of Colima and will work with the Colima campus of ITESM to manage the program. A contingent of faculty members from Monterrey Tech will spend time on the Chico campus this coming summer.
Dean of the School of Graduate, International, and Sponsored Programs Robert Jackson, Dean of the College of Computers, Engineering, and Technology Ken Derucher, and faculty members Susan Place, Dennis Schlais and Charlotte Eklund have been involved in the planning in nine months of planning to complete the agreement.
Dean Jackson commented, “NAFTA has dramatically changed the relationship between Mexico and the U.S., particularly California. This agreement is very much in keeping with changes in our international relationship. It positions CSU, Chico to partner with one of the most prestigious institutions in Mexico. It has great potential for students studying business, engineering, Spanish, and Latin American studies.”
