Uzbekistan Educators to Visit Chico to Study Civics Education
California State University, Chico, in collaboration with Resources in International Studies Education (RISE) and local public schools and organizations, will provide a five-week training program to assist secondary educators from Uzbekistan in exploring and developing civics education curriculum, materials and teaching methods. Arrival in Chico is scheduled for October 6, 2000.
The 10 participating educators, selected by the American Councils for International Education and funded by the Agency for International Development, will be linked with mentor teachers and administrators in participating public schools in the Chico community. The program provides internships, workshops and site visits, which provide examples of the relative openness and democratic nature of U.S. schools and political culture.
An important part of the program includes the opportunity for two Chico Unified School District teachers to visit Uzbekistan in the spring of 2001. In April of this year two CUSD teachers toured schools in the St. Petersburg Oblast as a component of last year’s program. It has been an enriching experience for them and for their students.
Participating local schools include Chico Senior High, Pleasant Valley High, Chico Junior High, Bidwell Junior High, Marsh Intermediate, and Little Chico Creek Elementary.
