Residence Hall Spirit Week Begins October 9

On Monday, Oct. 9, students in California State University, Chico residence halls will kick off “Spirit Week 2000.”

Fashioned after MTV’s popular series “The Real World,” events will include competitions between residence halls that yield points. At the end of the week, three awards will be given: Overall Spirit Cup, Kow (Sportsmanship) Award and the “Toga” Award for best use of a theme.

Monday’s challenge is a scavenger hunt to take place on campus. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday involve different sporting events. A hall-decorating contest will be held Friday. Awards will be given out Friday evening, followed by a special “Real World Chico” dinner. Also, in celebration of Friday the 13th, two horror films will be shown on a large screen that night.

Spirit Week leads into Homecoming Weekend, which will begin Saturday morning. From 8:30-10 a.m. in the Recreation Center, a pancake breakfast will be served. Cost is $5 and parents are invited.

Parents are also encouraged to attend the Homecoming BBQ at Nettleton Stadium at 11:30 a.m. Following the BBQ, parents can meet with Residence Life staff to ask questions, share some information and get to know each other.

The residence halls will be open 2-4 p.m. that day for parents to tour. Resident advisors and directors will also be present.

Saturday night in the Recreation Center, a “Slam Jam House Party” will be held. This event is open to the entire Chico community. Three DJs will be providing music. This party begins at 9:30 p.m.

At 10:15 p.m., the 3-point and slam dunk contest will take place at Acker Gym, followed by Midnight Madness. The CSU, Chico men’s and women’s basketball teams will be introduced, and the first scrimmages of the season will take place. This event is also open to the entire Chico community.
