Getting the Community Involved in Census 2000
The Census 2000 Butte County Complete Count Committee, represented by the Center for Economic Development, will be holding a press conference on Thursday, March 30, at 9 a.m. at the Chico Council Chambers on Fourth and Main Streets in Chico. The conference is to promote community involvement in completing the Census 2000 forms.
This is the final push of the Butte County Complete County Committee for people to return their completed census forms by Wednesday morning, April 5, 2000. Because of undercounting in the 1990 Census, Butte County lost valuable resources from both the state and federal governments.
It is imperative for the community to recognize why the 2000 Census is important and how it will benefit Butte County as a whole. Answering the census helps communities obtain federal funding and valuable information for planning hospitals, roads and more. Decision makers are made aware of where new schools and greater services for the elderly are needed. Representation in the U.S. Congress is also determined by the census count.
The public must also be made aware that by law, the Census Bureau cannot share answers with the IRS, FBI, Welfare, Immigration or any other government agency. Census workers are sworn to secrecy and can face fines and prison terms for releasing any confidential information.
The County Complete Count Committee is formed in every county to decide the organization of outreach to reduce undercount in the 2000 Census. The Center for Economic Development is a private non-profit organization specializing in information resources and communities in Northern California.
