Student Scores Well in Script Competition
California State University, Chico communication design student Chris Palko, a resident of Redding, placed third in the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) National Script Writing Competition.
Palko’s script, “Reunion,” was judged with 33 other scripts in the new Short Film category. Short scripts are categorized as narrative films, usually five to 30 pages in length.
A total of 79 scripts were considered, and only nine students from three categories were honored. Palko received a $200 check, software from Screenplay Systems Inc. and a book of choice from Focal Press.
Fred Thorne, a professor in the Department of Communication at CSU, Chico, is a member of the BEA’s Writing Division. Thorne lobbied the BEA to institute the new Shorts category, which began this year.
The Broadcast Education Association National Student Scriptwriting Competition is designed to highlight outstanding student scripts in the categories of feature film, short film and television series.
