Black History Month Events at California State University, Chico
California State University, Chico celebrates Black History Month by hosting events scheduled throughout the month of February. Events include the Lulu Washington Dance Theatre, the Black Inventors Museum, former Olympic medallist Lee Evans, noted poet Saul Williams, Bob Marley Day and a conference hosted by the Black Student Alliance.
Descriptions of the events follow.
* Feb. 19, Transformation, Transcendence, and Tradition: Black Studies in the New Millennium, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. in Ayres Hall. The Black Student Alliance is hosting a conference to present a new perspective on Black Studies, a perspective which shows new solutions to injustices in American Society. Workshops and speakers will occur throughout the day, and Professor Molefi Kete Asante will give a keynote speech. Admission is free.
* Feb. 19, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, 7:30 p.m. in Laxson Auditorium. CSU, Chico has co-commissioned the Lula Washington Dance Theatre to perform Rites 2000, celebrating the coming of the new millennium. Lula Washington is well known for exciting choreography, blending techniques from modern, African, and classical dance, plus street movement and performance art. Rites 2000 will be performed in addition to repertory works from Washington, Donald McKayle, and Donald Byrd, marking the twentieth anniversary of the Washington Dance Theatre. * Feb. 23, An Evening of Spoken Word with Saul Williams, 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. The Multicultural Poetry Slam Festival culminates with a performance by poet Saul Williams. R. Eirik Ott will be master of ceremonies for the event, and Nandi Crosby, professor of sociology/women’s studies at CSU, Chico, will also perform. For more information call 898-6005.
* Feb. 24, Bob Marley Day, 7:30 p.m. in Shurmer Gymnasium. Bob Marley Day is a celebration of the life and accomplishments of the reggae legend. Luciano, Mikey General and Dean Fraser and the Fire House Crew will play to honor Marley. For more information please call (530)898-6005.
* Feb. 25, Black Inventors Museum, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Humanities Center Gallery in Trinity 100. The one-day show, which originates from Los Angeles, is a “traveling museum” that displays the contributions of black inventors from ancient Egypt through modern times. The show is sponsored by Students in Free Enterprise, the National Society of Black Executives and the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is on the ground floor of Trinity Hall located in the center of the CSU, Chico campus.
* Feb. 25, Lecture by former Olympic medallist Lee Evans, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. in Acker Gym. Evans will speak to student and faculty about his approach to life and how to visualize a goal and focus on the steps needed to achieve it. Evans is a world class track and field star and two-time Olympic Gold medal winner whose world record in the 400m stood for 24 years. Evans represented the United States during the civil rights movement in the 1968 (Mexico City Games) and the 1972 Olympic Games. Evans is sponsored by the Chico International Training Camp, the student spirit group Wildcat Pride and the department of athletics. Autographs will be signed at the end of the lecture.
