Due to an increase in applications, California State University, Chico has closed fall 1999 admissions for first-time freshman and lower-division transfer students as of today, Dec. 15.

Fall 1999 admissions remain open for graduate students, international students, upper-division transfer students and Educational Opportunity Program students.

Lower-division transfers are students who have fewer than 56 units; upper-division transfers have 56 or more units. Educational Opportunity Program students are historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students.

CSU, Chico received 8,200 undergraduate applications from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30 for fall 1999 enrollment, a 37-percent increase over that same period last year, when 6,000 applications were received. Last yearÕs applications were up 8 percent over the previous year.

Traditionally, the priority filing period for fall enrollment opens Nov. 1. In last yearÕs enrollment cycle, the first-time freshman application period for fall 1998 closed March 16th. That was the first time the University had cut off applications by reaching its enrollment target since 1990.

The undergraduate application period for the spring 1999 semester closed Aug. 31.

Robert Hannigan, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, said the application-period closure is needed so that current students can obtain the classes they need to graduate in a timely manner. He also said the University bases its budgeting on a year-to-year student enrollment figure, and exceeding that enrollment would limit the UniversityÕs ability to provide educational resources students require.

Enrollment for the fall 1998 semester at CSU, Chico was 14,982. Fall 1997 enrollment was 14,248.

Hannigan said the increase in applications to CSU, Chico is beyond the well-reported overall increase in the number of high school-age students in California.

“I’m really excited that our campus-wide efforts to increase the size and quality of our applicant pool coordinated by Linda MacMichael and the Admissions Office staff are showing results,” said Hannigan. “This application increase will enable the University to focus on its long-term enrollment goals, student persistence and student success. Enrollment management spans this entire range of student experience and I’m very please with our initial efforts throughout the campus.”
